XP Boots to desktop, No Icons, Toolbar's just the Wallpaper

This is my investigation into this problem on my PC.

Windows XP Home w/SP2 Integrated
Athalon XP 2500+
512Mb DDR Ram 120Gb Drive - 2 partitions

Started occuring for some strange reason recently. It boots to desktop and all you see is the wallpaper, that's it. No Icons, No Quicklaunch, No Start Menu,
= Nothing
I let it sit there sometimes up to 5 minutes and it never loaded.
There is no Disk activity cause the light doesn't flash.
It's almost like the Shell didn't load.
I've been doing this for a long time with a shortcut to my LAN on desktop where I can Disable/Enable and never had any problem's.
It may boot first time like this or 2 times or 3, just random. Then it may boot to desktop and not occur again for awhile. I first seen this when I clicked restart and went outside for about 30 minutes and came back in and when logged in it occured.

Some Info up front
I'm an Unattender and copy my CD and then slipstream everything into it including SP2 and all update's. I also setup all my software with these method's. I been doing this nearly a year (Oct. 03) and have never had any problem's like this till recently. I started trying to modify my LAN setting's. I am on a satellite and it's very particular about the setting's.

It then started occuring every time I booted. I searched the Internet and found about 3 or 4 other people had this happening to them.

  1. One person was able to fix his by doing this.
just resolved the issue of once I got to my wallpaper my computer would have a 1-2 minute delay before I could interact with anything on the desktop. I hope that this helps you. I am running broadband (dsl) and what I had to do was enter an IP address into the local area connection.

Click start / control panel / Network and Internet Connections / Network Connections (look in the left pane under details and copy down the subnet mask and IP address) / right click the Local Area Connection / select Properties / Highlight by clicking on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) (do not uncheck the box) / click properties. Click the radio button for the option "use the following IP address" Now enter the IP address and the subnet mask that you copied earlier. (Although any IP address and subnet mask will work) Click Ok to close that window / click OK to close the next window and then reboot.
  2. One person was able to fix his by doing this.
The problem came from 250 instances of spyware.... all i had to do was start in safe mode and remove them.
Not My problem cause I keep mine clean of the garbage.

I tried that and had other problem's like my browser wouldn't connect. I tried ipconfig /flushdns and everything I could think of. Deleting the LAN in safe mode and reinstalling once rebooted.

Ok try one other thing
I disconnected my LAN cable, rebooted and done my Unattended Install. My Last Unattend was I slipstreamed SP2 onto the CD. The SP2 copy is the Admin version for multiple computer's I downloaded from Microsoft the day it was released. Once totally setup I reconnected the cable and let it setup and then Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options, Connections, LAN Setting's, Use a Proxy server. Thats for my satellite and it's needed, you may not need it.

Problem Cured But:
Why did this just start doing this all of a sudden?
It just done it when I used a copy of a new XP SP2 CD from a friend.
I'm 100% legal so I thought why not. I ordered my own copy to test once again and see if there's still a problem. I know if Microsoft found something wrong they would just fix it and not say anything, just let people pull their hair out.
I'm also looking into the differences between this new CD and my slipstreamed one.

Hope this help's someone out there, If you have other experiences with this reply in my Off Topic Forum and let me know and I'll add your Information.
